Application Programming Interface
a.k.a. API
A doorway that lets one piece of software talk to another, such as your trading bot talking to your broker.
In plain English
A doorway that lets one piece of software talk to another, such as your trading bot talking to your broker.
An application programming interface (API) is a set of rules that lets programs exchange information. In trading, a broker's API lets your own code pull prices, check your account and send orders without you clicking anything.
APIs are the backbone of algorithmic trading. They are also a fast way to make expensive mistakes, because a bug can fire orders far quicker than a human ever could. Test on a demo account first.
