In plain English

An international organisation in Basel, Switzerland, that serves as a bank and meeting place for the world's central banks.

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is often called the central bank for central banks. Founded in 1930 and based in Basel, it holds deposits for central banks, hosts their regular meetings and sets global banking standards through the Basel Committee.

For forex traders, it is best known for its Triennial Survey, the most authoritative estimate of how big the currency market is and which currencies are traded most.
