In plain English

Chair of the US Federal Reserve from 2006 to 2014, who led its response to the 2008 financial crisis.

Ben Bernanke was an academic expert on the Great Depression who ended up fighting the worst crisis since it. Under his leadership the Fed cut rates to near zero and launched huge asset purchases, better known as quantitative easing.

His 2013 hint that those purchases might slow set off the 'taper tantrum', a sharp jump in bond yields and a rush out of emerging-market currencies. He shared the 2022 Nobel Prize in economics for research on banks and financial crises.
