Profit/Loss
a.k.a. P&L, P/L, PnL
How much money a trade or account has made or lost, either still open (unrealized) or closed (realized).
In plain English
How much money a trade or account has made or lost, either still open (unrealized) or closed (realized).
Profit/loss, written P&L, is the scoreboard. On an open trade it is unrealized: the number dancing in your platform as price moves. Once you close the trade, it becomes realized and lands in your balance for good.
Traders check daily, weekly and monthly P&L. Watching the open P&L tick by tick, though, is one of the fastest ways to make emotional decisions. Many traders hide it and focus on whether price is behaving the way their plan expected.
