Shadow
a.k.a. Wick, Tail
The thin line above or below a candlestick's body, showing the highest and lowest prices reached.
A shadow, also called a wick, is the thin line sticking out of a candlestick's body. The upper shadow reaches the highest price of the period; the lower shadow reaches the lowest. The body only shows where price opened and closed.
Long shadows tell stories. A long upper shadow means buyers pushed price up but sellers slammed it back down before the close: rejection from above. A long lower shadow means the opposite. Patterns like the hammer and shooting star are built on them.
