Uptick
a.k.a. Plus tick
A trade at a higher price than the one before it.
In plain English
A trade at a higher price than the one before it.
An uptick is a trade that happens at a higher price than the previous trade. The opposite is a downtick. Counting upticks versus downticks gives a rough, real-time feel for whether buyers or sellers are more aggressive.
In casual speech, it simply means a small increase: "an uptick in inflation", "an uptick in volatility".
