In plain English
The official currency of Argentina, code ARS, known for long bouts of high inflation and repeated devaluations.
The Argentine peso (ARS) is a textbook case of what persistent inflation and debt crises do to a currency. Over the decades it has lost value again and again, and the country has lived with exchange controls and several parallel exchange rates, including the unofficial 'blue dollar'.
Many Argentines save in US dollars because they do not trust the peso to hold value. It is an exotic that can move in violent jumps when policy changes.
