Blue Chip

a.k.a. Blue-chip stock

A share in a large, long-established, financially solid company.
In plain English

A share in a large, long-established, financially solid company.

Blue chips are the household-name giants: big, profitable, around for decades. The term comes from poker, where blue chips traditionally carried the highest value.

They are usually steadier than small, young companies, but 'safe' is relative. Blue chips can and do fall hard in a bear market.
