The British pound (GBP), or sterling, is the oldest currency still in use. It is set by the Bank of England's policy, UK data and, often, UK politics. Brexit, budget scares and elections have all sent it lurching.
GBP/USD has a famous nickname, cable, from the telegraph cable that once carried its price across the Atlantic. Pound pairs are known for bigger swings than many other majors.
