The buy-side are the customers of Wall Street: firms that manage money and invest it, such as hedge funds, pension funds and asset managers.
The sell-side are the banks and brokers who create, sell and make markets in those products. Both trade huge amounts of currency, but for different reasons: the buy-side to invest, the sell-side to serve clients and manage its book.
