Client
A customer of a broker or bank.
In plain English
A customer of a broker or bank. In retail trading, that is you.
To your broker, you are a client. Regulators often split clients into categories, such as retail and professional, and give retail clients more protection: leverage limits, negative balance protection, and rules on how their money is held.
Being classed as 'professional' can unlock higher leverage, but you usually give up those protections in exchange.
