In plain English

A monthly US survey from The Conference Board asking households how they feel about the economy, jobs and income now and ahead.

The Consumer Confidence Index polls American households about current conditions and their expectations for the next six months. It is benchmarked so that 1985 equals 100.

Consumers drive most US spending, so a drop in confidence can hint at weaker spending ahead. Moods do not always match wallets, though, and people often keep spending while grumbling.
