In plain English
An economy that is growing and industrialising but is not yet considered fully developed, such as Brazil, India or South Africa.
Emerging markets sit between developing and developed economies. They often grow faster and pay higher interest rates, which attracts investors.
They also carry more risk: political shocks, currency crises and sudden capital flight. EM currencies tend to rise in calm, confident markets and fall hard when global fear spikes.
