Euro (EUR)
a.k.a. EUR, Fiber (EUR/USD), Single currency
The shared currency of the eurozone countries, code EUR, and the second most traded currency in the world.
In plain English
The shared currency of the eurozone countries, code EUR, and the second most traded currency in the world.
The euro launched in 1999 for electronic payments and as cash in 2002. It is run by the European Central Bank and used by most EU countries, from Germany and France to Croatia and, since 2026, Bulgaria.
EUR/USD is the most traded currency pair on the planet, nicknamed 'Fiber'. One interest rate for many very different economies is the euro's great strength and its recurring headache, as the debt crisis of the early 2010s showed.
