A marketplace where buyers and sellers trade assets under common rules, such as a stock exchange or a crypto exchange.
An exchange brings buyers and sellers together in one place, matches their orders and publishes prices. Stock and futures exchanges are tightly regulated and often route trades through a clearing house.
Crypto exchanges do the same for coins, but rules and safety vary hugely by platform and country, and several big ones have collapsed with customer funds inside. Spot forex, by contrast, mostly trades over-the-counter rather than on a central exchange.
