The G20 started as a finance ministers' meeting in 1999 and became a leaders' summit during the 2008 crisis. It includes big emerging economies such as China, India and Brazil alongside the G7.
Its communiqués can signal coordinated policy, and it oversees bodies such as the Financial Stability Board.
