In plain English

A New York Fed gauge that combines shipping costs, delivery times and other data to measure strain on global supply chains.

The GSCPI blends freight rates, airfreight costs and survey data on delivery times and backlogs into one number. Zero is normal; high readings mean supply chains are under stress.

It became popular during the pandemic, when snarled supply chains helped push inflation higher.
