In plain English

Short for 'Greek exit': the possibility, feared during the debt crisis, that Greece would leave the euro.

Grexit was coined in 2012, when Greece's debt crisis made many wonder if it would be forced out of the eurozone. The idea peaked in 2015, when Greece closed its banks and imposed capital controls before agreeing a new bailout.

Greece stayed. The word spawned a family of copycats, most famously Brexit.
