Long

a.k.a. Buy, Long position, Going long

Planting your flag and betting the price climbs the hill.
In plain English

Buying something because you expect its price to rise. In forex, going long a pair means buying the base currency.

Going long means you buy now and hope to sell higher later. In forex, long EUR/USD means you buy euros and sell dollars, betting the euro will strengthen.

You profit if the price rises and lose if it falls. Pair that with a stop-loss so a falling price cannot drag you down with it. The opposite bet is going short.

Worked example

A long trade

  1. Buy EUR/USD at 1.0850 with a mini lot ($1 a pip).
  2. Sell at 1.0900: that is +50 pips.
  3. 50 × $1 = $50 profit (before costs).

Bottom line: Had price fallen to 1.0800, it would be a $50 loss instead.

Don’t be that stickman

Falling in love with a long trade and refusing to admit the price is sliding the wrong way.
