Macanese Pataca
a.k.a. MOP, Macau Pataca
The currency of Macau, the casino hub on China's south coast, held in a tight peg to the Hong Kong dollar.
In plain English
The currency of Macau, the casino hub on China's south coast, held in a tight peg to the Hong Kong dollar.
The Macanese pataca (MOP) is the money of Macau, a special administrative region of China best known for its casinos. It does not wander on its own: Macau's monetary authority keeps it pegged to the Hong Kong dollar, which is itself pegged to the US dollar. So the pataca rides two leashes back to the greenback.
You will rarely see it on a retail broker's platform. It is an exotic currency, and Hong Kong dollars are happily accepted in Macau anyway.
