NAHB Housing Market Index
a.k.a. HMI, Builder confidence
A monthly survey of US homebuilders asking how good business is right now and how it looks ahead.
In plain English
A monthly survey of US homebuilders asking how good business is right now and how it looks ahead.
The NAHB Housing Market Index asks members of the National Association of Home Builders how they rate current sales, expected sales and the number of people walking through show homes. The answers become a score from 0 to 100; above 50 means more builders see good conditions than poor ones.
Builders feel interest-rate changes early, so the index gives a quick read on housing before harder data like housing starts and new home sales arrive.
