In plain English

A one-of-a-kind token on a blockchain that records ownership of a specific item, such as digital art, a collectible or a game item.

An NFT (non-fungible token) is a token that can't be swapped one-for-one with another, because each is unique. One bitcoin is the same as any other bitcoin; one NFT is like a numbered concert ticket, with its own identity.

NFTs are used to record ownership of digital art, collectibles, game items, tickets and more. Usually the NFT points to the image or file rather than containing it, and owning it doesn't automatically give you copyright. NFT prices boomed wildly around 2021 on marketplaces like OpenSea and then crashed hard for most collections.

Don’t be that stickman

Thinking that buying an NFT means you own the artwork's copyright. Usually you own the token, and only the rights the creator explicitly grants.
