Personal Consumption Expenditures

a.k.a. PCE, Personal Spending, Consumer spending

The monthly US measure of how much households spend on goods and services, the engine of the American economy.
In plain English

The monthly US measure of how much households spend on goods and services, the engine of the American economy.

Personal consumption expenditures (PCE), often reported as personal spending, adds up what American households spend each month on everything from cars to haircuts. Consumer spending makes up roughly two-thirds of US GDP, so this number is a big clue about the whole economy's health.

It comes out alongside personal income and the PCE price index. Spending growing faster than income can mean people are dipping into savings or borrowing, which cannot go on forever.
