Satoshi
a.k.a. Sat, Sats
The smallest unit of bitcoin: one hundred-millionth of a coin (0.00000001 BTC).
In plain English
The smallest unit of bitcoin: one hundred-millionth of a coin (0.00000001 BTC).
A satoshi, or sat, is the smallest slice of bitcoin: 0.00000001 BTC. One bitcoin is 100,000,000 sats. It's named after Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
As bitcoin's price climbed, sats became the handy way to talk about small amounts. "Stacking sats" means steadily buying little bits. Network fees are often quoted in sats too.
Worked example
Converting dollars to sats
- Say bitcoin is $50,000, so 1 sat = 50,000 ÷ 100,000,000 = $0.0005.
- $10 buys 10 ÷ 0.0005 = 20,000 sats.
Bottom line: Sats turn awkward decimals into whole numbers.
