Solidity is the language most developers use to write smart contracts for Ethereum. It was designed by Gavin Wood and others, and it compiles into code that runs on the Ethereum Virtual Machine.
Because a deployed contract can hold millions and usually can't be patched like a normal app, a single bug in Solidity code can be catastrophic. That's why serious projects pay for audits, and why "audited" is only reassurance, never a guarantee.
