In plain English
A UK and Ireland-style product where you bet an amount per point that a market will rise or fall, without owning anything.
Spread betting lets you bet on price movements in so much per point. Bet 2 pounds per point that the FTSE 100 will rise; if it climbs 50 points, you make 100 pounds, and if it drops 50, you lose 100. It is offered mainly in the UK and Ireland, where it is regulated as a financial product and has its own tax treatment.
It is leveraged, which means losses can exceed what you first put down. It is close cousin to the CFD.
