Squawk Box
a.k.a. Squawk, Audio squawk
A live audio news feed where announcers read out market-moving headlines and rumours as they happen.
In plain English
A live audio news feed where announcers read out market-moving headlines and rumours as they happen.
A squawk box is a speaker on a trading desk that constantly blares out news: data releases, central bank headlines, big order flow rumours, often seconds before they hit screens. The name comes from the squawking sound of the old intercom speakers on trading floors.
Many services now sell squawks to retail traders. Speed matters, but so does judgment: a rumour read out at speed is still a rumour.
