In plain English
The Bank of Japan's quarterly survey of business conditions, Japan's most watched gauge of corporate sentiment.
The Tankan is a quarterly survey run by the Bank of Japan that asks thousands of Japanese companies whether business conditions are good or bad. The headline number is the large manufacturers' index: the share of firms saying "good" minus the share saying "bad".
Because it covers so many companies and feeds into the BOJ's thinking, a big surprise can move the yen and Japanese stocks.
