Technical Indicator
a.k.a. Indicator, Chart indicator
A calculation based on price or volume, drawn on a chart to help you read trend, momentum or volatility.
A technical indicator is maths laid over a chart. It takes past prices (and sometimes volume) and turns them into a line, a band or a histogram that is easier to read than raw candles. Moving averages smooth out the trend, oscillators like the RSI measure momentum, and tools like Bollinger Bands track volatility.
Every indicator is built from data that already happened, so all of them lag to some degree. They are best used as a second opinion on what price is already telling you, not as a magic signal machine. Stacking ten of them on one chart usually adds confusion, not clarity.
Piling on more and more indicators hoping one will finally give a clear signal. Most of them are just repackaging the same price data.
