TRIN

a.k.a. Arms Index, Short-term trading index

A stock-market breadth indicator comparing advancing vs declining stocks with the volume flowing into each.
In plain English

A stock-market breadth indicator comparing advancing vs declining stocks with the volume flowing into each.

TRIN, also called the Arms Index after its creator Richard Arms, divides two ratios: rising stocks to falling stocks, and the volume in rising stocks to the volume in falling stocks. Around 1.0 is neutral.

A reading well below 1 means heavy volume is pouring into rising stocks: bullish. Well above 1 means volume is crowding into falling stocks: selling pressure. Extreme readings are sometimes used as contrarian signals that panic or euphoria has gone too far.
