In plain English
Trader slang for violent, unforgiving market conditions where moves are fast and painful.
When traders say the market is ugly, they mean it is brutal: fast, violent moves, gaps, stops getting run, and very little mercy for anyone on the wrong side. "It's getting ugly out there" is the trading-floor version of a storm warning.
Ugly markets reward small size and quick decisions and punish stubbornness. They often arrive with a shock headline or a risk-off wave.
