In plain English
A radioactive metal used to fuel nuclear power plants, traded in a small, specialised market.
Uranium is the fuel for nuclear reactors. It is not traded on a big, liquid exchange like oil or gold; most is sold through long-term contracts between miners and utilities, with a thinner spot market alongside. Kazakhstan, Canada and Australia are leading producers.
Interest in nuclear power as a low-carbon energy source has revived the uranium story in recent years. For currencies, uranium is a small factor compared with oil or metals, but it does matter for some producer economies.
