In plain English

A Fed report, published eight times a year, that collects stories from businesses across the twelve Federal Reserve districts.

The Beige Book is the Federal Reserve's field notes. Each regional Fed bank talks to local businesses, bankers and economists, and the report summarises what they hear about hiring, prices and demand. It comes out about two weeks before each FOMC meeting.

It is made of anecdotes, not hard numbers, so it rarely moves markets much. But it gives a feel for the ground-level economy the Fed is looking at.
