In plain English
A cryptocurrency that split from Bitcoin in a 2017 hard fork to allow bigger blocks and cheaper payments.
Bitcoin Cash (BCH) was born on August 1, 2017, out of a bitter fight over how Bitcoin should grow. One camp wanted bigger blocks so more payments fit in and fees stayed low. When they lost the argument, they launched a hard fork with larger blocks.
Everyone who held bitcoin at the split received the same amount of BCH. Bitcoin Cash still exists as a separate coin, but Bitcoin kept the name, the bulk of the hashpower and most of the value. It later split again itself.
