Bitcoin ATM
a.k.a. BTM, Crypto ATM, Crypto kiosk
A kiosk that lets you buy, and sometimes sell, bitcoin with cash or a card, usually for hefty fees.
A Bitcoin ATM looks like a cash machine, but instead of handing you money it sends crypto to your wallet. You feed in notes, scan your wallet address as a QR code, and the coins are on their way. Some machines also work in reverse, paying out cash for crypto.
They are convenient and quick, but the fees and markups are often far higher than an online exchange. They are also a favourite tool of scammers, who phone victims pretending to be a bank, the police or the tax office and talk them into feeding cash into a kiosk. Once the coins leave, there is no getting them back.
Following instructions from a caller who says your money is in danger and must be moved through a Bitcoin ATM. No real bank or government agency asks for that.
