Bitcoin ETF
a.k.a. Spot bitcoin ETF, Bitcoin exchange-traded fund
A fund listed on a stock exchange that tracks the price of bitcoin, so investors can get exposure through an ordinary brokerage account.
A Bitcoin ETF is an exchange-traded fund whose value follows bitcoin. You buy its shares like a stock; the fund deals with buying and storing the coins. A "spot" ETF holds actual bitcoin; a futures ETF holds futures contracts on it instead.
US regulators rejected spot bitcoin ETFs for years before the SEC approved a batch in January 2024, including the converted Grayscale Bitcoin Trust. ETFs make access easy and familiar, but you don't hold the coins yourself and you pay an annual management fee.
