In plain English

The US government agency that regulates securities markets, and a central player in the fight over how to regulate crypto.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) polices US markets for stocks, bonds and other securities. Its job is to protect investors, keep markets fair and make companies disclose what they should.

In crypto, the big question is which tokens count as securities. If one does, the people selling it must follow strict registration and disclosure rules. The SEC has sued many crypto firms and ICO issuers over this, and in 2024 it approved spot bitcoin ETFs. Its approach has shifted with its leadership, so check the latest before relying on any rule.
