Business Inventories
A monthly US report on the value of goods that manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers have sitting in stock.
In plain English
A monthly US report on the value of goods that manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers have sitting in stock.
Business inventories measures the stuff on shelves and in warehouses. Firms build stock when they expect sales to rise, and run it down when they are cautious.
Rising stock alongside rising sales is healthy. Rising stock while sales stall can mean goods are piling up unsold, which often leads to cutbacks later. It feeds into GDP calculations but rarely moves currencies on its own.
