Choppy Market
a.k.a. Chop, Choppy price action
A market that jerks up and down in short, messy swings without heading clearly anywhere.
A choppy market is all motion and no direction. The price lurches up, gets slapped down, jumps again, and after hours or days of this ends up roughly where it started. There's no clean trend to ride.
It's where trend-following strategies go to die: every breakout reverses, every stop-loss gets clipped, and fees quietly pile up. Many traders shrink their size or simply sit out the chop.
Trading more often when the market is choppy, trying to win back the last whipsaw, and getting chopped up again.
