CPU

A CPU (central processing unit) is the general-purpose brain inside every computer and phone. It's good at doing many different jobs, one after another, very quickly.

In Bitcoin's first days, people mined on ordinary CPUs. Then GPUs, which handle thousands of simple calculations at once, took over, and later specialized ASIC machines. Today CPU mining only makes sense on a few coins deliberately designed to resist specialized hardware.
