ASIC Mining
a.k.a. ASIC, ASIC miner, Application-specific integrated circuit
Mining crypto with machines built for one single hashing job, far faster and more efficient at it than any ordinary computer.
An ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) is a chip designed to do one thing only. Bitcoin ASIC miners do nothing but run Bitcoin's hashing calculation, trillions of times a second, and leave CPUs and GPUs far behind.
ASIC mining made Bitcoin mining an industrial business, run from data centers full of roaring, heat-blasting machines chasing the cheapest electricity. The machines are expensive, are useless for anything else, and go obsolete as newer models arrive, which is why profit margins are tight and very sensitive to the coin's price.
