In plain English

A graphics chip built to do thousands of simple calculations at once, which made it a popular crypto-mining tool.

A GPU (graphics processing unit) is the chip that draws the images in video games. To do that, it runs thousands of small calculations side by side, where a CPU handles fewer at a time.

That made GPUs far better than CPUs at the repetitive guessing game of mining. For years, rooms full of graphics cards mined Ethereum and other coins, and gamers grumbled about the shortages. Bitcoin mining moved on to specialized ASIC machines, and when Ethereum dropped mining in The Merge, GPU mining shrank to a handful of smaller coins.
