In plain English

Any money that exists only in electronic form, from bank balances and cryptocurrencies to central bank digital currencies.

Digital currency is money with no physical form at all. It's a wide umbrella. Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin are digital currencies. So, in a sense, is most of the money in your bank account, which is just numbers in a bank's database.

There's also a newer kind: central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), digital cash issued directly by a central bank. Unlike bitcoin, those are run by a single authority. The big difference across all of them is who controls the ledger: one company, one government, or a network of strangers.
