In plain English
When a shorter moving average, usually the 50-day, crosses above a longer one, usually the 200-day: a widely watched bullish signal.
A golden cross is a crossover between two popular moving averages: the 50-day climbing above the 200-day. It suggests momentum has shifted upward over the longer term. The reverse, the 50 falling below the 200, is the ominous-sounding death cross.
Because both averages trail price, the signal arrives late, often after much of the move. It gets media attention more for its name than its precision.
