Hard cap

The absolute maximum amount of something allowed: a coin's final supply, or the most a token sale will raise.
In plain English

The absolute maximum amount of something allowed: a coin's final supply, or the most a token sale will raise.

In crypto, a hard cap is a ceiling written into the rules. For a coin it's the total that can ever exist: Bitcoin's is 21 million, and no amount of demand can mint one more.

In a token sale it's the maximum the project will raise; once that's hit, the sale shuts. Either way, the cap is only as hard as the code and the people who control it.
