Herd Mentality

a.k.a. Herd behaviour, Herding

One wildebeest bolts. Then a thousand do, and nobody's sure why.
In plain English

Following what everyone else is doing, buying or selling because the crowd is, rather than for your own reasons.

Herd mentality is the urge to do what the crowd is doing. When everyone's buying, buying feels safe; when everyone's selling, staying in feels reckless. It's an ancient survival instinct that works poorly in markets.

It's what inflates bubbles and turns small drops into panics. Crypto, with its 24-hour social media chatter, is a perfect breeding ground. Having written rules for when you buy and sell is one of the few defences.

Don’t be that stickman

Taking the size of a crowd as proof that it's right. Crowds are often loudest just before they turn.
