John Ray

John J. Ray III is a veteran corporate turnaround specialist who had previously helped clean up after the collapse of the energy giant Enron. In November 2022 he became chief executive of FTX as it entered bankruptcy, replacing Sam Bankman-Fried.

His job was to find out where the money went and claw back as much as possible for customers and creditors. His early court filings painted a picture of extraordinarily poor record-keeping and controls, which became a defining part of the FTX story.
