Sam Bankman-Fried, known as SBF, founded the trading firm Alameda Research and then the exchange FTX. For a while he was crypto's golden boy: a billionaire on magazine covers, a major political donor and a public advocate for sensible regulation.
When FTX collapsed in November 2022, it emerged that customer deposits had been used by Alameda. In 2023 a US jury convicted him of fraud and conspiracy, and in 2024 he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
