Malawian Kwacha

a.k.a. MWK

The currency of Malawi in southern Africa, a thinly traded exotic that has been devalued several times.
In plain English

The currency of Malawi in southern Africa, a thinly traded exotic that has been devalued several times.

The Malawian kwacha (MWK) is Malawi's money. The name means "dawn" in the local Chichewa language. Malawi imports far more than it exports, so the kwacha has spent years under pressure, and the central bank has had to cut its official value in sharp, one-day devaluations. For traders it is a textbook exotic: thin, wide-spread and prone to sudden lurches.
