Zambian Kwacha

a.k.a. ZMW

Zambia's currency, closely tied to the price of copper.
In plain English

Zambia's currency, closely tied to the price of copper.

The Zambian kwacha (ZMW) is Zambia's money. Zambia is one of Africa's largest copper producers, so the kwacha often follows copper prices up and down. In 2013 it was rebased, knocking three zeros off, and in 2020 Zambia defaulted on its foreign debt, putting the currency under heavy pressure. It shares its name, meaning "dawn", with the Malawian kwacha.
